He Received WLCA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016

Just months before he passed away, Stano's founder and president, Matthew Stano, was honored by the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association (WLCA-Milwaukee Chapter), with the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award.

This award recognizes industry leaders who have contributed exceptional ideas, time, insight and leadership to the WLCA over a period of years.

Matt was chosen for this honor because of his early involvement in the development of the statewide publication, "Green Side Up", for his service as president of the organization in 1978-79 and for his 20+ years as a committee member and team leader on the WLCA Metro Milwaukee Professional Scholarship Fund.

Matt was long-recognized as a leader in the local and statewide landscape industry. In 2002 he was inducted into the Wisconsin Green Industry Federation Hall of Fame.

Stano Courtyard Project
Wins 2013 WLCA Award for Design

This beautiful Lake Drive courtyard, designed and installed by Stano in 2013, was named a Gold Award winner in the the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association Award competition. This prestigious award was for design excellence in the residential property category.

The courtyard project, which was involved a complete redesign, far surpassed the client's expectations. It continues to draw many compliments and praises. For the complete photo story on this project, click here.

Adding colorful floral treatment to both east and west entrances of Lake Park was among Stano's more visible projects in recent years. Stano Landscaping was called in to install various plants in the median plant bed located at the Lake Park entrance at Newberry Boulevard.

In 2014 and 2013, the work included installation of geranium, salvia, red canna lily, coleus, petunia, begonia, dusty miller and fountan grass (pictured above).

In 2012, Stano completed a project on the Lake Park bluff. It entailed installation of plantings along the stairway leading from The Lake Park Bistro to Lincoln Memorial Drive below. Both the Boulevard entry and the stairway are used by hundreds, if not thousands, of people over the course of the summer.

Stano Landscaping has received three prestigious awards for its role in a major landscape renovation project at the Wisconsin Club (Milwaukee). The awards include a "Gold Award" and a "Judges Choice Award for the Best Overall Poject" in the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association (WLCA) Awards Program, and a "Grand Award" (Commercial Landscape Contracting category) in the 41st Annual Environmental Improvement Awards Program sponsored by PLANET, the Professional Landcare Network.

The project includes a paved entryway and inviting outdoor dining area and gardens, This was the final phase of the Club's ten-year renovation project. The resulting new "outdoor look" features a beautiful entryway through the private gates, a walkway and gardens surrounding a historic Belvedere gazebo (1873) and a new outdoor social and dining area along the south grounds. These additions enhance the Club's views, both inside and out.

Landscape construction faced several critical challenges along the way -- namely:
  • a short time frame of less than 120 days
  • the facility was open daily for lunch, dinner and parties during construction
  • the large, circular paver drive surrounds a fountain and required logistical sequencing to allow building access for other trades and construction traffic.
  • hardscaping around the fragile, historic gazebo required extra care
  • The finished entryway incorporates an ADA wheelchair accessible ramp for guests. To soften the visual effect of the ramp, plant material was added on both sides.

During summer, 2013, Stano was actively involved in the development phase of the Selig-Joseph-Folz Amphitheater in Kadish Park. The Park, located on a hill leading up to Kilbourn Park, is one of the highest points in that part of the city.

Stano's team completed lawn restoration (seeding and sodding) and installed drain tiles and block walls. The outdoor amphitheater, Milwaukee's newest, is home to the Skyline Music Series, sponsored by the COA Youth & Family Centers. The Series begins its eight annual season this summer.

The stage faces uphill toward five tiers of concrete seating, curved in a semicircle to provide optimal sight lines toward the stage, as well as views of the city and the river. Seating is built into the walls of the amphitheater, and on the lawn and over the hillside where blanket seating is available. The theater was named a winner in Mayor Tom Barrett's 2013 design awards program.

Stano Landscaping takes pride in its Grand Award for "The St. Luke's Healing Garden" in the 40th Annual Environmental Improvement Awards Program sponsored by PLANET, the Professional Landcare Network. These green roof gardens at St. Luke's Hospital were specially-designed to provide indoor and outdoor sitting areas on a year-round basis.

The indoor conservatory provides a serene, climate-controlled garden environment. The interior garden offers a tropical theme, with gracefully branched trees, trickling water and vivid shrubs and flowers amid lush groundcovers. Most notably, the indoor garden is accessible to doctors, medical personnel, patients and their visitors, regardless of weather.

It's interesting to note that PLANET's Environment Improvement Awards reflect the association's commitment to creating and preserving the beauty of our country's landscape. The organization represents approximately 4,200 green industry service-provider companies and suppliers nationwide. Its member firms specialize in lawn care, design/build installation and interior plantscaping and landscape management. These firms and their employees represent more than 100,000 green industry professionals.

Previously, another Stano greenroof received recognition for design excellence. The green roof at Milwaukee School of Engineering was named a 2008 Project of Distinction by the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc., Wisconsin Chapter last year and was awarded a Gold Award in the category of Green Building.

Special mention was made of the interesting features of its green roof. Stano Landscaping is proud to have been a part of this unique green roof project which included dramatic sculptures, decorative planters and concrete paver work as well as the installation of intensive soil mix, planting, sodding and irrigation.

Stano Landscaping first introduced greenroof installations as a service offering in 2006.

Since then, the demand for these special installations has grown steadily as more and more organizations have made conscious decisions to go "green." To date, Stano has installed more greenroofs than any other Milwaukee landscape contractor, and its greenroof portfolio includes:
  • University of Wisconsin School of Human Ecology (Madison)
  • Bayshore Mall (Milwaukee)
  • University Club Tower (Milwaukee )
  • River Renaissance (Milwaukee )
  • Froedert Hospital Cancer Center Greenroof (Milwaukee)
  • Mortara Instrument Greenroof (Milwaukee)
  • Eastcastle Place (Milwaukee)
  • Milwaukee School of Engineering (Milwaukee)
  • St. Luke's Hospital Healing Gardens (Milwaukee)
  • Monroe Clinic (Monroe, WI)
Stano works hand-in-hand with area landscape architects, general contractors and roofing contractors on its green roof projects. Greenroofs typically require intricate planning and typically include special drainage, pavers, engineered topsoil, irrigation, and trees, shrubs, perennials and annual plantings. The end result is a beautiful, artful and practical environment.

A "Working Partnership:"
Stano Landscaping and Natural Athletic Turf (NAT)

Stano Landscaping is now in its 10th year of a working partnership with Natural Athletic Turf, LLC (NAT), an important name in Milwaukee area sports field installations and preservation since 1974.

Its client list has long included Parks and Recreation Departments, Little Leagues, Golf Courses, High Schools, Colleges and Universities. Stano's Greenroof Gardens on the Northwest Addition of the Monroe Clinic recently received top honors in the Wisconsin Landscape Contractor's Association (WLCA) annual competition. The project, located in Monroe, Wisconsin, involved the installation of greenroofs on three roof areas, transforming them from flat, black surfaces into artful gardens, friendly to the environment.
